How much should an ebook cost? - (The Domino Project blog)

This is the wrong question.
The right question is: How much will an ebook cost?
Because the answer isn’t up to one author or one publisher or even a price-fixing cartel. It’s up to the market, which is a far more complicated entity. There are no shoulds in the market, just reality.
On one hand, the marginal cost of delivering a single ebook is close to zero. It might cost Amazon and B&N a dime to transmit it, but it certainly costs the publisher nothing.
(People who disagree with that statement don’t understand the concept of marginal cost and should look it up before participating in this discussion. Marginal cost is very different from opportunity cost or sunk cost or lost profits.)....READ MORE...

What You've Heard About Subsidy Publishing

You have spent months, maybe years working on your manuscript and now it is time to get your work out to the world. After months of waiting and hundreds of dollars on stamps and envelopes you are strongly starting to consider the route of "Pay for Publish".

You have done your research. In fact, you've logged more late night hours on the internet than you care to admit. You have probably looked at Editors and Preditors, Writers Beware, and the other writing forums that say, "Never pay to be published!" Maybe you have also noticed that many of those forums have not been updated for years.

In 2007, about the time that the forum submissions were written, that was the case. Publishers of all sizes were readily accepting manuscripts for submission. Something happened on the way to writing nirvana, however. The economy crashed. You remember that, don't you?

During the past few years hundreds of small and large publishers have gone out of business. Remember Borders? It kicked the bucket too. Those publishers that have stayed above water are largely "not accepting submissions for the foreseeable future". New writers better have a super agent or a really famous last name if they have any dreams of getting a book out on the market any time soon.

Subsidy publishing, or "Pay for Publish" is now not quite as vile and disgusting in the publishing world as it used to be. For many authors, the idea of creating your own list price, owning the rights to your book, and pocketing more of the profits kind of has a nice ring to it. Some of those big publishing houses that used to bash the subsidy publishing model are now actually adopting it.

As a "traditionally published author" I must admit that I can not see the logic in sticking with the traditional model. The key is finding a company that understands the new market and has the passion for books that you do.

BookImage is run by authors and artists for authors and artists. You will "Pay for Publish" with BookImage, but you will get the book that beats your expectations. We encourage you to shop around and find a better deal than BoookImage. We will never pass off a template book cover or charge you for "extras" that you don't need. We have five package deals that are designed with the author in mind. BookImage prints with Lightning Source International, so you know you have Ingram Books and Amazon.com, the world's largest book distributors, behind your book!

You name your book price, you own your book's rights...It's your work and you deserve to reap the benefits!
